Insurance in Mexico

When you’re at home, you’re required to have an auto insurance policy to drive legally. However, most people don’t think about how those responsibilities change when you’re driving in another country. As of 2019, it’s actually required that any vehicle traveling on a federal highway in Mexico is required to have third-party liability insurance coverage at the very least.

The insurance company you get your policy from must also be registered with the Mexican Department of Insurance. If you’re planning on going to a trip to Mexico, you have to make sure you have the right type of Mexican auto insurance.

Vehicle Import Permit

One thing you have to consider when it comes to driving in Mexico is that you may be required to have a temporary vehicle import permit to visit some destinations. If you’re driving past the Mexico Free Zone, you will be required to get a temporary import permit (TIP) to take your vehicle to Mexico.

If you’re simply visiting the Baja Peninsula, you don’t need to obtain a temporary vehicle import permit. However, you will need to get a permit if you’re planning on driving beyond kilometer 98 on Mexico Federal Highway No. 15 in Sonora. For more information on the Free Zone see this post.

FMM

Another thing you should get when you’re visiting Mexico is FMM. If you’re simply planning a short visit to Mexico, this FMM tourist card will make it easy for anybody to identify you. You can get a tourist card by showing a valid passport and paying about $30 USD at the border office.
